new opera Zavala-Zavala.
Telling a story of family separation and survival at the US/Mexican border, this new work is inspired by true events, and will highlight local artists

as Sergio Garcia, Elizabeth Mondragon as Natividad Zavala Zavala, and
Judy Yannini
as Sara Lopez.
Karlo Neumann-Caragol
plays the Niño in his operatic debut. Zavala-Zavala will open on Friday, April 8th, at 7:30pm at the McLean Community Center, followed by a repeat performance on Saturday, April 9th at 7:30 pm at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' Terrace Theater
The evening of premieres opens with Our Queer Mother, Gabriela,
a new commission by
Emily Lau
celebrating of the poems of Gabriela Mistral and their translations by
Langston Hughes, which features our very own Children’s Chorus of Washington’s Chamber Ensemble. On April 9th only, The Best Cuisine – a new work by composer
Carlos Simon with text by baritone
Carl DuPont
– completes the program with orchestral support provided by the
Chiarina Chamber Players. Angel-Gil Ordóñez
music directs, leading members of the
Georgetown University Orchestra
in Zavala-Zavala
and Our Queer Mother, Gabriela.
