CCW is proud to join IN Series and its creative partners are pleased to announce the April 8th and 9th world premiere of Brian Arreola and Anna Deeny Morales’ new opera Zavala-Zavala. Telling a story of family separation and survival at the US/Mexican border, this new work is inspired by true events, and will highlight local artists Alex Alburqueque as Sergio Garcia, Elizabeth Mondragon as Natividad Zavala Zavala, and Judy Yannini as Sara Lopez. Karlo Neumann-Caragol plays the Niño in his operatic debut. Zavala-Zavala will open on Friday, April 8th, at 7:30pm at the McLean Community Center, followed by a repeat performance on Saturday, April 9th at 7:30 pm at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' Terrace Theater

The evening of premieres opens with Our Queer Mother, Gabriela, a new commission by Emily Lau celebrating of the poems of Gabriela Mistral and their translations by Langston Hughes, which features our very own Children’s Chorus of Washington’s Chamber Ensemble. On April 9th only, The Best Cuisine – a new work by composer Carlos Simon with text by baritone Carl DuPont – completes the program with orchestral support provided by the Chiarina Chamber Players. Angel-Gil Ordóñez music directs, leading members of the Georgetown University Orchestra in Zavala-Zavala and Our Queer Mother, Gabriela.
